22-year sentence handed down to man who fatally stabbed friend to death in front of his family

A 22-year prison sentence has been handed down to a young man convicted of killing his best friend in front of his family. On Monday, 19-year-old Romello Harley was sentenced to a minimum of 22 years behind bars for the murder of 19-year-old Tashawn Watt.

Last month, Harley was convicted of murder and possession of a knife.

At the Watts’ home in Sydenham, London, a heated argument broke out between Harley and Watt’s brother Kashawn on June 25, 2021.

Police say after Watt was punched in the face, the two brothers called their mother to ask Harley to leave.

Harley was captured on surveillance video returning to the property with “apparent determination” just 15 minutes later. He was armed with a knife.

According to police, Watt was lured outside and stabbed to death by Harley as the victim’s family watched in horror.

Watt’s sad mother Denise Campbell called her late son, known to the family as ‘Tata’, a ‘calm and kind character’ who would ‘walk away from any confrontation’ during the trial.

“My last memory of Tata was him dying on the ground in front of me,” the anguished mother added.

Referring to Harley, Watt’s mum said: ‘We showed Romello nothing but kindness and allowed him into our house as if he were one of our family. Sometimes I have questions that I know will never be answered.
