A thug who kidnapped his ex-girlfriend before she fell out of the van he took her in has had his sentence increased by a further four years.

Chay Bowskill, who threw Angel Lynn into the vehicle before she was found seriously injured, had her seven-and-a-half-year sentence increased to 12 years and three months by Court of Appeal judges.

She suffered life-changing injuries after being caught by her ex and friend Rocco Sansome, both 20, in 2020.

She was injured after getting out of a van traveling at around 60mph on the A6 towards Loughborough.

The 19-year-old is unable to communicate, walk or feed herself and needs round-the-clock care.

In February, Bowskill was sentenced to seven and a half years and Sansome was sentenced to 21 months in prison.

But the sentence seemed ‘unduly lenient’, said Solicitor General Alex Chalk QC

Now the Court of Appeal judges have decided to double Bowskill’s sentence.

It will now be increased to 12 years, it was confirmed today.

Bowskill, of Empingham Drive, Syston was cleared of ‘unintentionally causing grievous bodily harm to her’ as it could not be proven how she left the vehicle.

Speaking at the Royal Courts of Justice following the judgment, the young woman’s aunt, Jackie Chamberlain, said the family were “relieved” by the increased sentence.

Speaking on behalf of Ms Lynn’s family, she said: “We were told at the time not to appeal, but we were so convinced we should have appealed, and we did and we got what we wanted today and Chay’s sentence was increased.”

Ms Chamberlain thanked the public and Women’s Aid for their support in the appeal.

She continued: “We are very grateful to the British public who have supported us as a family throughout the process, we can put this behind us now, we can move on, we can bring Angel home, we can get its expansion built so we just want to thank the UK public, judges and press who have carried our story over the past few months.

“We are relieved because we don’t want him to leave prison, we want him to get what he deserves and we have been given life.”

Asked about the increased sentence, she continued: ‘We will take this because it is more than what we got in the first place and we have been told not to appeal.

Sentencing the thug at the time, Judge Timothy Spencer QC told Bowskill: “She was a beautiful young woman who should have enjoyed the carefree years of her late teens into early adulthood.

“You treated her in a despicable way. You demeaned her to such an extent that she must have felt worthless on a regular basis.

“You bombarded her with repugnant and degrading messages. You controlled her freedom of movement through various means.

“She had no right to any kind of life apart from you. I am convinced that you inflicted violence on her, causing her to bruise, on at least two occasions.”
