Final sentence handed down in Drew Cato murder case

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) — The family of a local murder victim got a little more closure on Thursday.

Virginia Reynolds was convicted of covering up a death after the 2018 murder of Andrew Cato IV.

Cato, a 28-year-old father of two, was shot and buried in McCormick County, and the entire community spent weeks looking for him.

Reynolds is the mother of Cato’s ex-girlfriend, Blaeke Wolfe, who was previously convicted in this case with Devon Stringfield. Both were sentenced to life with the possibility of parole.

Reynolds pleaded guilty and Georgia accepted his plea deal. She was sentenced to 10 years probation. But if she violates the conditions of probation, she will be locked up.

Cato’s father, Andy Cato, still deeply feels the loss of his son but hopes the healing can begin.

“It’s also closure for us,” he said. “The family has a chance to recover and really start to heal.”

He said it is difficult to overlook the crimes.

“Your first reaction is that you want to smother it…but another reaction is that the Bible tells us we’re supposed to forgive, and I haven’t gotten to that yet,” he said.

“The biggest thing we have to do is heal. We all need to heal and we need to learn to forgive.

The defense attempted to obtain a reduction of Reynolds’ sentence under the first offender law in the state of Georgia, but it was denied.

Probation conditions include:

  • For the first two years, it will be under curfew from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • It must be used all the time and within 60 days of that date.
  • She can’t have any communication with the victim’s family.
  • She must pay a $10,000 fine as a special condition within six months.
  • She cannot have any firearms in her possession and will be subject to random drug testing.

If she completes her probation without a violation, her record could be expunged

With the plea agreement, she waived her rights to a jury trail.

Cato’s death led to the creation of Project Drew, an organization that helps the families of missing people in the CSRA and defends the families of victims, especially at the courthouse.

“When someone is missing you really don’t know what to do or who to turn to because you think the police are doing something but really you’re just a number to them,” Andy said. cato. “You are just one of a thousand missing, so we are an organization that allows us to gather strength and get a message out and let the streets know that they are missing.”
