Man pockets death penalty for killing traditional ruler in Ekiti


May 05 (THEWILL) – An Ekiti State High Court sitting in Ado Ekiti has sentenced 42-year-old Omoniyi Ademola Stephen to death by hanging for killing a monarch.

The convict was charged with one count of murder contrary to Section 316 and punishable under Section 319 of the Penal Code, Cap C16, Laws of Ekiti State in Nigeria, 2012.

The indictment reads, Omoniyi Ademola Stephen, on 20th August 2018 at Odo-Oro Ekiti in the Judicial Division of Ikole Ekiti, murdered His Royal Majesty, Oba Gbadebo Ibitoye Olowoselu ll, the Onise of Odo-Oro Ekiti in Ikole Local Government Area in Ekiti. State.

Recounting the death of the monarch, one of the chiefs, who testified in court, said: ‘We were at the palace that day for the Onise council meeting, around 7:00 a.m., before the meeting started’ , Omoniyi Ademola Stephen entered the palace and sat on Kabiyesi’s seat, but the chiefs frowned at his action and drove him away.

“After the meeting, the late Onise in the company of his clerk was returning to the main palace, Ademola came out of hiding and attacked Kabiyesi with a knife on the road and stabbed him to death, before that day he marched himself as the king of the city.

To prove his case, the state’s attorney, Adegboyega Morakinyo called five witnesses and presented a medical report, statements from the convict, a knife and a rope among others as exhibits, while the convict spoke for his own defense through his lawyer Tope Amr Salami and called no witnesses.

In his judgment, Judge Olukayode Ogundana has dispelled the idea that the accused is insane, therefore, the accused, Omoniyi Ademola Stephen is hereby sentenced to death and will be hanged until he renders his last breath. May God have mercy on his soul.
