Agartala, 03 Aug 2022: The government of Tripura on Tuesday announced a 5% allowance for all service employees and pensioners despite lack of funds; as reported by Cabinet Spokesperson and Minister of Information and Cultural Affairs (ICA), Sushanta Chowdhury.

Speaking at a press conference at the Civil Secretariat here in Agartala city on Tuesday evening, Chowdhury said: “The Council of Ministers under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha in a meeting decided than 5% of Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Assistance (DR) for civil servants and pensioners from July 1, 2022.”

“The government is under severe financial strain and is still in the queue to recover from the adverse effects of the pandemic. However, the government will have to bear Rs 523.82 crore as an annual expense to provide 5% DA and DR every year. The government needs funds of Rs 104.76 crore to provide 1% AD,” he added.

The minister said: “Employees on fixed salaries will also benefit from this benefit. A large number of government employees and retired employees will benefit from this firm decision by the state government.

Asked about the DA gap between central and state government employees, the Cabinet Spokesperson said that “33% of DA is received by central government employees. The state government is doing its best to minimize the discrepancy as soon as possible.

Notably, after the formation of the BJP-led coalition government in Tripura, 3% DA was announced and now more than 5% DA has been granted. “I can’t assure government employees, but there’s a good chance the announcement of another DA hike will probably be made at the end of this year.”
